3 Changes in the Digital Marketing Landscape this Year

3 Changes in the Digital Marketing Landscape this Year

Change is inevitable. This applies to many things, but it especially applies to the realm of digital marketing. It’s astounding how digital marketing trends come and go every year and how some trends suddenly grow and evolve in consonance with the changing times. As technology continues to evolve and the business world expands, the digital marketing realm does as well.

Today, you can choose from a wide array of digital marketing strategies to make your brand known – from email marketing and social media marketing down to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Pay-per-click (PPC) strategies. However, it is worthy to note that digital marketing changes so much because of the adoption of new technologies brought on by the ever-changing business landscape.

This year, we are expecting some drastic changes in digital marketing trends. Here are three changes in the digital marketing landscape that you should be aware of so that you can adjust, adapt, and cope with them as they come. Shall we take a look?

Change 1: SEO Strategies

Let’s start with SEO in general. One thing is for sure: It won’t look the same as it did last year. Why? SEO is beginning to lean towards voice search. Based on a study conducted last year, it is said that two out of five adults use voice search once per day. Given this data, it is anticipated that by 2020, fifty percent of all searches will be done through voice search. This, in turn, means that more people will be searching through devices like Google Home or Alexa through voice search. The problem is there’s a possibility of people not landing on your website; therefore, conversions from voice search will be lower. Through voice search, Google will be giving people the answers. That said, you must prepare for this by optimizing your website for voice search. It’s time to acquire your share of site traffic before the rest of the market shifts to using voice!

Change 2: Digital Algorithms

Another drastic change that is expected to take place this year is a shift in digital algorithms. You’ve probably noticed by now that every search engine has algorithm updates every now and then. The problem is that they are getting more complex and are harder to beat. Google will no longer only look at established metrics such as content and backlinks for high rankings on the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). They will also look at user metrics such as user time spent on a website, a site’s bounce rate, brand queries, click-through-rate performance, and other user metrics. After all, Google aims to rank sites at the top that users love the most. Now more than ever, it’s important to look at users’ needs and come up with solutions for them by creating the best experience, the best product, or even the best service available on the market. This is the only way that you can keep up with the changing algorithms and succeed as a business.

Change 3: Growth hacking

Digital marketing channels are crucial in changing times. In order to thrive, you need to employ the use of multiple channels or platforms. Why? You can’t build a company using only one channel in this day and age.

One example is the multi-billion-dollar company, Dropbox. When it first hit the market, it tried to acquire users through Google AdWords. The problem was that it cost anywhere between $200 and $300 to acquire a customer. Dropbox, however, only costs $60 a year. Why spend $200 to acquire a user who only pays $60? The digital marketing strategy underwent a great shift and Dropbox soon was growing with the help of growth hacking by giving you more free space, the more users you invite. This is how they were able to grow into a multi-billion-dollar company.

The bottom line is that you can no longer build a company using one channel. You will likely need to resort to growth hacking. The goal of growth hacking strategies is generally to acquire as many users or customers as possible while spending as little as possible. You need to employ this in order to get ahead in the competitive market and ensure booming growth thereafter.
